April is sexual assault awareness month (SAAM). Sexual assault can happen to anyone. When someone shares their story, it takes a lot of courage. The first and most important thing we can do is believe them.

Many survivors worry they will not be taken seriously. Some fear blame or judgment. Others are scared they will be told it was their fault. These fears can keep people silent. Sometimes, the people who hurt them tell them these things as part of the abuse. When we listen and believe, we help break that silence.

Believing survivors does not mean you need all the details. It means you trust that their experience is real. Simple words like “I believe you” or “I’m glad you told me” can make a big difference. These words help survivors feel safe and supported.

Support can also mean respecting choices. Some survivors want to report. Others do not. Both choices are valid. Healing looks different for everyone. What matters is that survivors are in control of their own path.

When communities believe survivors, it sends a strong message. It says abuse is not okay. It says survivors are not alone. It helps create a culture of respect and care.

We all play a role. By believing survivors, we help reduce shame and fear. We make it easier for others to speak up. And we take one step closer to a safer world for everyone. This April, SARCC is launching initiatives throughout our communities during #SAAM to send a clear message:

Dear survivor,

We believe you. Your voice and your story matter. Support is available. Healing is possible.

Watch for our Clothesline Project, Teal Lights On initiative, and SARCC Champions who are going to help us spread the word!.
