Coaches and youth leaders play an important role in keeping children safe from sexual abuse. As spring sports gear up, its important for coaches in our community to have access to good information, options for training, and direct referrals to help in supporting kids and families.

Prevention starts with clear boundaries. Avoid one-on-one situations behind closed doors, use transparent communication, and follow organizational safety policies at all times. These steps protect both youth and adults.

Coaches should watch for warning signs such as fear, withdrawal, sudden behavior changes, or discomfort around certain people. Trust your instincts and take concerns seriously.

It is also important to empower young athletes. Let them know they have the right to say no, to speak up, and to be treated with respect. Encourage a team culture where safety and respect come first.

Most importantly, report concerns promptly and follow proper procedures. Speaking up can feel uncomfortable, but silence allows harm to continue. Coaches help shape not just skills—but safe, healthy environments where children can thrive.

Both paid and volunteer coaches are mandated reporters in PA. If your league needs a refresher on identifying and reporting abuse, request state-approved training from our SARCC Prevention Team.
