Resource Of the Week: National Interpreter Appreciation Day
Did you know that the first Wednesday of May is National Interpreter Appreciation Day? This day celebrates experts who connect those who want to communicate but don’t speak the same language, to those in government services, businesses, hospitals, organizations, and more – including SARCC survivors!
At SARCC, we utilize a service called Globo, which provides on call telephone translation services for our staff and volunteers to be able to help any survivor that comes through our doors or calls our hotlines. We also have video and on-the-spot interpretation equipment. We even have a SARCC board volunteer who completed medical interpreter training to better help us assist our survivors.
In March, our whole staff completed a language access training refresh along with learning from the PA Immigration Resource Center’s ISAN project and Juntos De Lebanon about the unique experiences and needs of immigrant survivors and survivors who speak languages other than English.
Why all these resources? Why all this training? Because every single survivor has the right to access healing and support in the language of their heart. Providing these resources helps us help our whole community more completely.
