Resource of the week: parents in the know
It feels like no one ever really tells future parents how hard it really is to be a parent. Having, raising, and loving young people takes work. Parents often spend their days, exasperated by sibling, arguments, and dirty socks on the kitchen floor. At the same time, we feel an overwhelming sense of love and devotion to these little people who call us mom or dad.
Not a day goes by when I don’t feel both fear and hope for my kids. I want them to be safe. I want them to have the tools. They need to live a full healthy life. I want people to be kind to them. I want them to be kind to other people.
As someone who has been doing sexual assault prevention and response work for over 20 years, one of the fears I carry is that my children will experience sexual abuse. I don’t think I am alone in this fear. The good news is that SARCC can offer programs to parents and community groups to help with identifying problematic behaviors and other adults, building skills for safe boundaries in your own home, and finding thoughtful ways to talk with your kids about your values and their safety.
Originally developed by Pittsburgh action against rape, the parents in the no curriculum provides a four session discussion and practice based education program for parents and caregivers. This program can be offered in small community settings, churches, and parent organizations. We also provide mandated reporter training that meets all educational and licensing requirements for the state of Pennsylvania. This is incredible opportunity for professionals and volunteers working with young people to build their skills and identifying and building a trauma informed response to suspected abuse of any kind.
