Resource of the week: SelfTember calendar and challenges

During the month of September, SARCC, staff, board, volunteers, and community participants are invited to join us in a self-care journey. Self-care is a hot topic issue and is closely related to both mental and physical health. Contrary to popular belief, self-care strategies encompass so much more than bubble baths and candles. Sometimes self-care is boring. Sometimes self-care means setting boundaries. Sometimes self-care is about connecting with the people we love.

We invite anyone who is connected with SARCC to join us on this journey. Lovingly called self tember, the month of September will bring a series of challenges, learning opportunities, virtual yoga classes with a certified instructor, and some new resources. What can you expect if you join the journey? Let me tell you!

The busy brain cure

Psssst. Our Director has been doing some reading! The busy brain cure by Dr. Romie Mushtaq offered some practical strategies for assessing whether focus, anxiety, and insomnia could be affecting your health and well-being. There is an online testing practical resources for helping to address the symptoms of a busy brain.

Digital detox

Unfortunately, most of us know the downsides of doom scrolling, and the exhaustion that comes with late night, phone sessions, and binge watching. Our Selftember calendar offers a few targeted challenges related to a digital detox. Even if you don’t do all of the challenges, the biggest challenge is simple. Spend 21 days where you turn off all screens at least 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime.

Lunch and learns

You are welcome to join SARCC staff and volunteers for a 30-minute lunch and learn sessions at 12:30 PM throughout the month of September. Topics will cover brain, paws breaks, organization, strategies for digital detox, and reflections of the self-care journey.

Chair yoga

SARCC board member and certified yoga instructor, Molly, will provide virtual chair yoga sessions for anyone who is interested in joining on Thursdays at noon. The simple low impact moves help to promote breathing and circulation.

Boring self-care Saturdays

Sometimes self-care is super boring.  It’s not all massages and candles. Sometimes it’s about washing your sheets, clearing out a cluttered closet, or grocery shopping and meal prepping. Self-care Saturdays are all about these boring self-care tasks that can help in making a big difference. We know it’s not fun. But everything is more fun when you do it in a community, right?

Mini challenges

Whether it is calling a friend, you haven’t talked to you in a long time just to say hi or drinking a cup of tea slowly out of a real mug, Selftember has several mini challenges for you! Are you ready to join the challenge? Download our Selftember calendar and watch for updates on social media. We would love to hear about your experience with a month dedicated to true self-care in so many different forms.
