With a 40+ year history of serving survivors, SARCC learned that sexual assault can have lasting traumatic impact for many survivors. SARCC offers trauma therapy to survivors and family members who experience lasting, challenging responses to their victimization. Our staff includes licensed therapists. Our trauma therapists learn the most up-to-date practices for reducing trauma, including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) treatment and TF-CBT (Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy).
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy has been shown in a number of studies to be an effective intervention for trauma survivors (Bisson & Andrew, 2007; Foa, Keane, & Friedman, 2009; Greenwald, Hall et al, 2015). It is an intervention that can be used with children and teens, as well as adults, and appears to be highly efficient, leading to lower drop-out rates, and reduces symptoms in less time than traditional therapies (Greenwald, Hall et al, 2015). The process uses bilateral (side-to-side) stimulation to help a survivor’s central nervous system learn to regulate mind and body reactions to memories.
How do I pay for therapy services?
You are not charged for therapy costs. Therapy may be billed through insurance, or may be fully paid through grant funding for victim services when available. Not having insurance will not keep you from accessing therapy.
How does EMDR Therapy work?
EMDR Therapy helps client to process sexual assault memories using eye-movement. Internal processing allows for privacy. No talking about the specific memories necessary!
Am I ready for therapy at SARCC?
You might be ready for therapy if:
- you have trauma reactions that make it hard to live your life as you want to
- you have a desire to improve your quality of life
- are willing to learn and practice ways to manage your symptoms of trauma
- you are ready to commit to the tough, but rewarding, journey to healing.
Who can use therapy services at SARCC?
Children and adults who have survived sexual violence or abuse can access therapy at SARCC. We also serve significant others (friends, family, partners, children, etc) working to process the event or learn to help their loved one. Therapy is offered both in-person and virtually.
