If you or someone you care about has experienced abuse, sexual violence, stalking, or harassment, you may have legal options to help create safety. In Pennsylvania, three types of civil protection orders may be available.

Protection From Abuse (PFA) Order: A PFA may help when abuse involves a current or former intimate partner, family member, or household member. It can set limits on contact and may provide other protections.

Sexual Violence Protection Order (SVPO): An SVPO may be an option when someone has experienced sexual violence and is at risk of further harm or intimidation. Unlike a PFA, an SVPO does not require the person who caused harm to be a family member, household member, or intimate partner. Criminal charges are not required to request an SVPO.

Protection From Intimidation (PFI) Order: A PFI may protect someone under 18 from harassment or stalking by someone who is 18 or older, when they do not have a family, household, or intimate relationship. A parent, legal guardian, or certain adult household members must file for a minor.

You do not have to figure this out alone. A local sexual assault counselor/advocate from SARCC can explain your options and help you understand the filing process. Pennsylvania courts also provide information and forms online. Want to talk to an advocate? Call our hotline at 570-628-2965 or 717-272-5308.
