Preventing sexual assault is a shared responsibility. It starts with respect, education, and action. Every single member of our community can be a part of this transformative change. One step at a time. Here’s a quick-start guide to becoming a SAAM Champion:
Step 1: Teach and model #CONSENT
One key step is teaching consent. Consent means a clear and willing “yes.” It can be changed at any time. Teaching young people about consent helps build healthy relationships based on respect.
Step 2: #SpeakUp #SpeakOut
We can also speak up when we see harmful behavior. Jokes, comments, or actions that make others uncomfortable should not be ignored. Saying something can help stop harm before it happens.
Step 3: Be an #Upstander
Looking out for each other matters, too. If a situation feels unsafe, check in. Offer help. Stay together. Small actions can make a big difference.
Step 4: #Believe Survivors
Prevention also means supporting survivors. When people know they will be believed and supported, they are more likely to speak up. This helps stop repeat harm and builds safer communities. Keeping local resources from SARCC at the ready to share when the time comes will help you demonstrate your commitment.
Step 5: Be a #SAAMChampion
Everyone has a role to play. By learning, listening, and taking action, we help create a world where sexual assault is not tolerated—and where everyone feels safe and respected. This year, we are calling on leaders and upstanders in our community to be #SAAM Champions. Our Champions commit to wearing a SARCC t-shirt, along with jeans on #DenimDay – April 29. Post your commitment to these 5 steps online. Share one of our #FastFacts on Consent, Trafficking, or Child Abuse Prevention.
Ready to join us? Email Ashley, Julia, or Clarissa to request your t-shirt and commit to the cause of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention this #SAAM, and all year long.
