Resource of the Week: Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset: What’s the difference?

The concept of a growth mindset vs. a fixed mindset comes out of the business world, but has expanded to connect with education, mental health, and fitness. A person with a fixed mindset may think that they are stuck with the knowledge and skills they already have. If they face challenges that they don’t have the skills to conquer, they’re stuck.

A growth mindset, on the other hand, leads a person to believe that they can learn new skills or seek more knowledge to overcome challenges. The Harvard Business Review shares,

“Someone with a growth mindset views intelligence, abilities, and talents as learnable and capable of improvement through effort.”

For someone working on healing from sexual violence, a growth mindset can feel empowering. The healing process has ups and downs. What a person wants or needs to may change over time. Life also brings new challenges that may require you to “level up” in your approach.

If you find yourself at a crossroads on your journey, remind yourself that it’s expected that you will outgrow your skills. Things that used to work may need to be retired, and trying something new can help you in new and different ways. If talking to someone will help, remember that SARCC has sexual assault advocates and therapists who are continuous learning new skills to help survivors and those who care about them.
